That was not a typo, I did say Dessert. Most of us, if not all, can agree that when someone mentions the word ‘dessert’ there’s something inside us that wants to leap. Yet, instead of it being our tummies, it’s our conscience. When it comes to the end of a nice dinner and before the waiter or waitress even brings us the dessert menu, we already know it’s going to be a hard “no, thank you”. So why is it that we no longer leave room for dessert? Why is it that eating dessert makes us feel guilty? If it’s not the person watching their weight, it’s the one watching their health, or it’s just culture that has convinced us that little pleasures are now guilty pleasures. Well, I’m here to tell you that it’s time to ditch the guilt! And if you don’t believe me, believe the science…

Who among you is not a fan of dessert, or claims to prefer salty over sweet flavours? My best guess is that they’ve gotten so used to not wanting to leave room for dessert that this is the choice they settled for. Yes, settled! While some people do prefer the salty over the sweet, there’s no doubt that always resisting sugary eats or dessert is a voluntary decision. It is not even biologically safe to avoid sugar completely, the natural of course. Even added sugar is added to so much in our diets these days that it’s not even safe to say we live a completely sugar-free life. While added sugar has its consequences and should be consumed in moderation, natural sugar is needed to sustain our blood sugar levels. Can you imagine a life where you don’t have to feel guilty about indulging in sweet things? Where even if you wanted a piece of dessert, you didn’t have to keep track of the calories? While you may be the one at the table to intentionally not leave room for dessert for reasons other than your health, we’ll the science can do the talking and convince you that even eating a little every day may not be such a taboo after all.

6 Reasons To Leave Room For Dessert Again:

1. It can reduce your blood pressure

It has been scientifically proven that a couple of bites of chocolate every day may help lower your risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Dark chocolate is known especially for its significant anti-inflammatory and immune system benefits. According to a 2011 Harvard study, eating dark chocolate daily lowered blood pressure in all 1,106 of their participants. The reason is that chocolate with a high cocoa content (as found in dark chocolate or unsweetened chocolate) contains flavonoids which the antioxidant that contributes to good health.

2. Can help decrease your chances of having a stroke

Because of the significant health benefits that dark chocolate carries, it was also proven that men aged 45-79 who ate 10 grams of it a day were less likely to have a stroke compared to those who completely cut it out. This is important to remember when it comes to following extremes. When choosing the right kind of dark chocolate, choose ones that contain 65 to 70 percent of cocoa or more. And don’t forget to look at the sugar and milk content as well.

3. It satisfies cravings

There’s no doubt that when you put excessive rules and restrictions on something you’re going to want it more. This has many disadvantages such as binge eating and self-loathing. By eating what you want when you want in moderate portions, you can train your appetite and mind to have good portion control. This means that you can trust yourself around food and not feel guilty to leave room for dessert at the end of the night.

4. It can reduce your sugar and fat intake

Due to majority of sugary products from the store being loaded with added sugar and fat, being intentional with the desserts you choose come into play. It is always important to guard against over-indulging when it comes to desserts that aren’t necessarily healthy. This pushes you to possibly baking more or ordering from bakeries or restaurants that supply quality desserts. The kind that makes you and your tummy smile. No guilt included!

5. It will inspire you to live a more active life

Yes, you heard right…As I’m sure this is not what you expected to find on a blog about dessert but I promise it’s not all bad. Balance is key in everything including, wanting your cake and eating it too. There’s no purpose in cutting dessert out to want good health if you don’t have some form of active lifestyle either. To find a balance if you want to enjoy the pleasure of indulging, make an effort to work it off after. Don’t look at both as a risk and reward, but rather look at it in its entirety just as a complete reward to both your health and pleasure.

6. Helps you ditch the guilt

As you’ve read, all the information provided has been backed up scientifically. This means that you can FINALLY ditch the guilt and enjoy and healthy and pleasurable life. This comes with achieving a balance and understanding your body needs better. You no longer need to work a risk and reward game or feel like you need to ‘deserve’ to eat a slice of cake. No. You can now leave room for dessert guilt-free. You finally have the ability to change the trajectory of how you view your body and the narrative of your mind.
